The collection consists of a memoir and a letter of James Anderson describing the conditions of Andersonville Prison, a prisoner of war camp outside of Camp Sumter, Ga. The memoir includes statistics about losses suffered by each state during the war. Also included in the collection is a letter from Anderson to Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederate States of America concerning prison conditions and the treatment of prisoners.

James Nesbitt Anderson was the first Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and the first Dean of the Graduate School at the University of Florida. He received a Bachelors of Literature from the University of Virginia in 1886 as well as a Master of Arts in 1887. He did graduate work in several institutions in the United States and Europe and received his Ph. D. in Greek, Latin, and Sanskrit from Johns Hopkins in 1894.
